PlayStation State of Play live coverage – tracking the latest PS5 leaks, rumors, and predictions

Update

I would think that almost everything shown during this PlayStation State of Play will have a PS5 Pro label attached to it. Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro go live on Thursday and given the exceptional starting price ($699.99 / £699.99), I personally believe Sony still has a lot of work to do to really sell the benefits of this more powerful console. Expect a lot of talk about frame rates and performance settings during this broadcast, as well as plenty of pretty dazzling particle effects.

Want to know more about the system? We have a list of confirmed PS5 Pro enhanced games and a PS5 vs PS5 Pro specs comparison.

Realistically, it's going to take a new first-party release from PlayStation Studios to really push this system forward – and that could take a long time. I'm excited to see what Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, and Sony Santa Monica can do with this thing… but it seems new titles from those teams are a long way off.

I know I said earlier that I'm pretty confident we'll get a release date for Death Stranding 2 tonight, but I already wish I could take back my bold prediction. It's Away more likely that we will see Lego Horizon Adventures … that is apparently The release is planned for later this year.

I hope the game comes out in the coming weeks, because everything we played at Summer Game Fest was pretty entertaining.

The PlayStation State of Play airs in less than 60 minutes! That means we still have plenty of time to talk about where Sony stands as we head into 2024.

Will Death Stranding 2: On the Beach appear in the PS5 State of Play? The highly anticipated platform exclusive is currently scheduled to release in 2025, but Kojima Productions has not yet given a firm date for it. Here is my second State of Play forecast for the night: The release date for Death Stranding 2 will be announced here tonight in the second quarter, so it should be well before the release of GTA 6 in the fall.

I'll tell you why I think Death Stranding 2 will be a big part of it, and it has everything to do with the Tokyo Game Show. Hideo Kojima was supposed to give a 60-minute presentation at the September 29th event titled “PlayStation Presents Death Stranding 2: Special Stage!!,” but it was recently extended to 90 minutes. That could be a sign that there will be a lot to talk about this week… or maybe Kojima just wants to have a longer conversation with some of the cast, who knows!

A friend of mine just wrote to me saying that after almost 12 months of me harping on about how incredible Alan Wake 2 is, Finally got it. I'm not telling you this to emphasize that peer pressure works, but because it reminded me that the second DLC expansion is due out in October.

Alan Wake 2: Lake House will apparently explore the mysterious FBC facility on the shores of Cauldron Lake, which is currently locked behind an inaccessible area. I actually think it's quite likely that we'll get a first look at the expansion here at State of Play, so that's my first bold State of Play prediction: Lake House will have a firm release date and a trailer showing Alan Wake/Saga Anderson making contact with Jesse Faden through the veil.

The Horizon Zero Dawn remaster, however, seems extremely likely. On September 19, the rumored game was discovered to be rated by the ESRB for PC and PS5 (a listing that was later taken offline). As for Days Gone, it might just be wishful thinking—many people loved Deacon St. John's cameo in the extraordinary Astro Bot, after all.

Speaking of the best PS5 game of 2024 so far, if you're still wondering whether to buy it or not, our five-star review of Astro Bot might help.

Of course, there are a lot of rumors about remasters at the moment. The most popular ones seem to revolve around Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) and Days Gone (2019). On the one hand, these titles are already technically playable on the PS5 due to backwards compatibility and still run exceptionally well – Guerrilla Games and Bend Studio make excellent games – so remasters may be premature.

On the other hand, I understand Sony's desire to push these franchises forward – to ensure that players new to the platform can make the most of these excellent experiences. If I had to choose one, I'd probably go with Days Gone; Bend Studio has been exceptionally quiet since 2019, and if a remaster buys the team a little more time to deliver what they're working on next, that's fine with me.

There have been rumors that we can expect a remaster announcement at State of Play, and I wonder if Soul Reaver will be included. Sony is currently kicking off its 30th anniversary celebrations, so there are plenty of titles in the back catalog that could make a splash.

If you asked me for a wish list, it might look something like this:

1. Killzone Shadow Fall remastered
2. Folklore remastered
3Infamous Second Son remastered
4. The Last Guardian – Remastered
5. Crack remastered Bloodborne Remastered

If you're looking for more information on Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered, you've come to the right place. (And by “I'm here for you,” I actually mean “Dustin Bailey is here for you,” because he wrote a nice article covering the leaked announcement in more detail.

While we always have to take PlayStation State of Play leaks with a grain of salt—I promise you, every single list circulating on social media right now is wrong—this one is confirmed: Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered.

The legendary Soul Reaver series returns on December 10th and will be available as a digital download on PS5 and PS4. While this doesn't replace my burning desire for a complete reboot of the series, it will be fun to return to this world with revamped graphics and major quality of life improvements.

With just under four hours to go before the highly anticipated PlayStation stream kicks off, I'll be walking you through the key predictions and bringing you up to speed on everything you need to know!

Hello and welcome to GamesRadar+’s live coverage of the PS5 State of Play for September 2024.
