Police investigate shooting near school

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Multiple law enforcement agencies searched the Cabin Creek area of ​​Kanawha County Friday morning due to a suspected hunting incident.

Police reported that gunshots were heard near Sharon Dawes Elementary School

Cabin Creek Road near the school was closed at the time of the incident but has since reopened.

The West Virginia State Police, U.S. Marshall's, Kanawha County School Security and various sheriff's deputies assisted in the investigation.

The Kanawha County School District said classes at Sharon Dawes Elementary School continued as scheduled after the curfew was lifted.

Maintenance workers on the school roof heard the gunshots and the sound of shotgun pellets hitting the roof.

According to officials, several small pellets were found on the roof of the school, but it is not known how long the pellets had been there.

The WVSP requested a police helicopter to assist with the investigation, as it was believed the shot came from a nearby forest. Since hunting season had begun, officers considered it possible that the shot was a negligent and dangerous mistake by a hunter.

The officers discovered several hunters in the forest and detained them for questioning. No charges have been filed yet and it is not yet clear who fired the shot.
