Rains in Chennai: Holiday for schools and colleges on October 15; Home office for IT employees

In view of the forecast of heavy rains, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday (October 14, 2024) directed the authorities to observe a holiday on Tuesday (October 15, 2024) for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and to proclaim Chengalpattu).

The chief minister also directed authorities to issue an advisory to allow employees of IT companies in these districts to work from home from October 15 to 18, an official release said.

Mr. Stalin chaired a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday to review monsoon preparedness. Deputy Prime Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Chief Secretary N. Murugandam and Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal were among the participants.

On Sunday (October 13, 2024), the Tamil Nadu government had informed the district collectors about the weather forecast till October 17 and further directed them to take precautionary measures and maintain law and order to avert any untoward incident.

The state government also listed the expected impacts in the districts, including the possibility of traffic disruption, waterlogging in low-lying areas, road closures due to falling trees/branches, damage in informal settlements and increased water levels in water bodies and landslides in hilly areas.
