Report: Oregon Ducks contact former five-star wide receiver Johntay Cook, who has left Texas

Could the Oregon Ducks pursue another former five-star wideout in the transfer portal?

According to a report from Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney, Oregon is among three schools that have been in contact with Texas sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook II, who left the Longhorns program this week and is expected to officially enter the transfer portal , when it opens Dec. 9. Other schools that have reportedly reached out to Cook include Georgia and Ole Miss.

Cook – who reportedly left Texas by mutual consent – is a former five-star recruit and the third-leading wide receiver in the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports composite rankings. In his second season at Texas, he had eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns, but he hadn't recorded a catch since the team's Sept. 28 game against Mississippi State.

Oregon previously recruited Cook, who ranked the Ducks among his top three schools when narrowing down his high school recruiting. He ultimately chose Texas and caught eight balls for 136 yards during his first season in Austin.

Oregon running back signed Tradarian Ball made a post on X/Twitter directed at Cook on Thursday, presumably with the intention of signing him to the Ducks.

Cook himself added to the speculation on social media with his own post on Wednesday. His Thumbs down cheered.

The transfer portal will officially open twice during the 2024-25 school year: December 9-28 and April 16-25.
