Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is urging voters across the United States not to vote for him if his name appears on their ballots and instead vote for former President Donald Trump.

This Election Day, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is asking voters across the U.S. who still see his name on ballots to do him a favor: “Don’t vote for me.”

Kennedy, who ran for president before dropping out of the 2024 race in August and supporting former President Donald Trump, made the appeal to voters in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“If you want to see me in Washington, DC, VOTE FOR PRESIDENT TRUMP. 🇺🇸,” Kennedy’s post reads.

Even after he leaves the race, Kennedy's name will still appear on the presidential ballot in some states. Here's why.

Why does Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appear on ballots?

Kennedy still appears on ballots in some states, including the battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin, as the Supreme Court declined in late October to allow the 70-year-old to withdraw his name.

The Supreme Court's decision was based on state election officials saying that early voting and absentee voting had already begun, making Kennedy's plea essentially too late.

Michigan election officials told the Supreme Court last week that over 1.5 million voters had already returned mail-in ballots with Kennedy's name as an option and that another 263,000 residents had voted early, CNN reported.

“This election is not just 'imminent,' it is already underway and voters are already voting,” Michigan officials told the Supreme Court, according to CNN.

When Kennedy dropped out in August, he initially urged his supporters outside the battleground states to vote for him if his name remained on their ballots. As for the battleground states, he said he would “remove” his name from their ballots because he might be a “spoiler” and could take votes away from Trump.

Why did Robert F. Kennedy support Donald Trump?

When Kennedy Jr. announced the suspension of his campaign during a speech in Phoenix, he declared his “support for President Trump” based on free speech, the Russia-Ukraine war and what he called the “war on our children,” reports reported CBS News.

“Joining the Trump campaign will be a grave sacrifice for my wife and children, but it will be worth it if there is even a small chance of saving these children,” he said, adding that he believes that processed foods, chemicals and obesity are affecting the health of children in the US

During the speech, Kennedy also said Trump had offered him a role in his second administration where he would address health care and food and drug policy, The New York Times reported. The former candidate added that he wanted to “believe” that Trump would keep his word “this time,” a reference to the time he claimed Trump declined to let him chair a vaccine safety commission in 2017 says the newspaper.

Since leaving office, Trump has suggested at several campaign events that Kennedy Jr. would play a “big role in health care” if re-elected. Kennedy said Saturday that Trump would remove fluoride from public water sources if re-elected.

“On January 20th, the Trump White House will advise all U.S. water systems to remove fluoride from public water,” Kennedy said in a post on Arthritis, broken bones and bone cancer.
