The Royals set a franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings in last night's win:

With another shutout in their decisive 3-0 win over the Nationals on Wednesday at Nationals Park, the Royals have thrown 26 consecutive scoreless innings, starting in the third inning on Sunday. This sets a new franchise record and breaks a 24-inning scoreless streak that occurred June 9-12, 1976 and again May 17-20, 2015.

It's that kind of pitching the Royals will need come October and they're getting closer and closer to having it after Wednesday's win.

FanGraphs' Davy Andrews examines why the Royals played their most recent L7:

Six of those seven losses were decided by either one or two runs. They always found a way to lose because they were cursed. At a certain point, that's just the simplest explanation. For Kansas City to break its winning streak, the team had to be fortunate enough to face a National team that had lost six of its last seven games, was already coming off its fifth straight losing season and was playing like it was desperate to give up a ball game . In other words, the only thing that saved the cursed Royals was facing a team that was somehow even more despised by the creators of the universe. Because if there's one thing the baseball gods love, it's anything that fits neatly into a baseball writer's pre-existing narrative.

Keith Law makes price picks with some royals mentioned ($):

Skubal will probably win this award unanimously or nearly unanimously, which I think is the story of this year – only one of the five awards has any drama that I can detect, while the others are probably all pretty obvious. To me, it's pretty remarkable that the Royals are taking two players in the top five, one of whom was one of the best players of the offseason. Burnes and Gilbert both get a push because they soaked up so many innings in the five-and-dive starter era, which puts them above the likes of Houston's Framber Valdez and Ronel Blanco, who had lower ERAs but didn't pitch as much (and (in Blanco's case, he probably had a lot of help from defense/luck).
