A fire caused the plane to burn. The park airport remains closed until further notice.

A North Carolina airport was closed Sunday after a single-engine plane crashed while attempting to land, killing several people, officials said.

At 5:55 p.m. local time on Saturday, the plane, a Cirrus SR22, crashed near Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board told USA TODAY in an email. The airport is located in Kill Devil Hills on the North Carolina coast, approximately 90 miles south of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

According to the National Park Service, the plane crashed in the wooded area of ​​the airport. Witnesses said the plane attempted to land at the airport.

After the crash, a fire burned the plane, and the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local fire departments later extinguished it.

“Several passenger deaths have been confirmed,” the park administration said.

According to the NTSB, four people were on board the plane when it crashed. The agency could not comment on the passengers' conditions.

When will First Flight Airport reopen?

According to the National Park Service, the airport will remain closed until further notice. The Wright Brothers National Memorial will also be closed on Sunday.

The airport was closed Saturday evening following the incident, local news outlet CBS 17 reported.

The NTSB is leading the investigation into the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration was also notified.
