ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, Dougherty County Executive Lorenzo Heard and Albany Mayor Bo Dorough signed the declaration of a state of emergency for the region.

According to the city, the signing came immediately following a press conference by Dougherty County EMA Director and Albany Fire Chief Cedric Scott on the weather forecast ahead of Hurricane Helene's landfall.

This action is the result of the activation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to prepare, respond to the impacts of the storm, and coordinate resources for the safety and well-being of all residents.

Sandbags can be picked up in Albany at the Public Works Department at 1900 N. Monroe Street. For Dougherty County, sandbags will be available at 2038 Newton Road starting Wednesday. More information on preparations for cities and counties across south Georgia can be found here.
