Halftime: Le Moyne 41, Syracuse 36

It's been 15 years since Le Moyne last beat Syracuse, but the Dolphins are now just a half of basketball away from ending that streak.

Le Moyne seemed to be the sharper and more focused team from the start. Despite being the underdogs on the road, they showed an intensity on both ends of the floor that seemed to rattle SU.

The Orange started the game with four turnovers in the first five minutes. They were also 2-for-12 from distance, an uphill battle compared to their last preseason game in which they shot from distance.

Syracuse’s rebounding and paint presence has been positive so far. Newcomers Donnie Freeman and Jyare Davis dominated the glass in the first half, grabbing seven each. The two were also the Orange's leading scorers. Davis has nine, Freeman eight.

The strength of Adrian Autry's squad was evident in the first half as six players scored at least four or more points.

First half

Both teams lived in the first half. Freeman knocked down a pair to give SU a 33-32 lead.

A cutting Freds Pauls Bagatskis gets a dunk and extends the Dolphins lead back to six.

Davis gets another rebound after a miss from Taylor. It's Davis' seventh rebound of the half.

A loose ball foul sends Freeman back to the free throw line and ends the half with a 1-2 score.

Syracuse gets into the bonus with 6:40 left in the game. Davis knocks down a couple at the stripe. With five points, he is currently the best Orange scorer.

Davis fends off a missed triple from Freeman, then dribbles powerfully into his defender to create space for a jump hook.

Freeman gets post contact and uses his 6-foot-10 length to greatly outpace the defense. He then received the ball from mid-range before trying to turn the ball over with a spin that was completely wrong. One thing is for sure: The former McDonald's All-American and five-star recruit is not afraid to be aggressive offensively.

7:53 left: Le Moyne 21, Syracuse 21

After a timeout, Davis backs the defender into the field before executing the layup with contact. He then converted the free throw to complete the old-school three-point play.

Davis immediately returned to the block, where he has been effective so far tonight. Another pair of free throws for the Delaware transfer, but he misses both.

Majstorovic forces the move at one end and then crashes into the attack board at the other end. He was fouled in the attempt and scored a 1-2 equalizer.

Lucas Taylor drives down the lane and lines up a left-handed shot for his first basket of the game.

JJ Starling steals the ball from Robby Carmody, goes strong to the basket and is fouled. He goes 1-2. On the next down, Starling has a chance for a three-pointer after a Freeman assist. The shot marked SU's first three-pointer of the contest after scoring 15 points in the previous game.

11:47 left: Le Moyne 17, Syracuse 11

Another Syracuse turnover, the fourth in the first five minutes.

Bell heads back into the lane, this time turning away from his defender and rising for a turn-around jumper.

Le Moyne does a good job of remaining aggressive from the start, both offensively and defensively.

New signing Jyare Davis with a clever post pass to a cutting Peter Majstorovic for the and-one finish. On the next play, Majstorovic stole the ball before the defender caught up to him and blocked his shot attempt on the fast break.

The free throw disparity is something to keep an eye on. The Orange are 1-1 while the Dolphins are 6-8. Six of those Le Moyne free throws came on three-point fouls.

3:28 p.m. left: Le Moyne 10, Syracuse 6

Eddie Lampkin Jr. opened the scoring with a jump hook off the post. Previously, the Orange had missed their first three shots.

Chris Bell, known for his shooting skills, takes to the lane for a two-handed slam.

The pressure from the Dolphins was noticeable early on newcomer Donnie Freeman and has forced two turnovers so far, which led to transition opportunities on the other side.

Before the game

The Syracuse Orange open the 2024-25 season at home against the neighboring Le Moyne Dolphins.

Historically, SU has dominated this matchup. Syracuse has never lost a game to the Dolphins in the regular season. The last regular season meeting was in 2008 when the Orange won 85-51.

Of course, Le Moyne provided the memorable surprise a year later with a shocking exhibition at the Carrier Dome.

Prior to this meeting in the 2008 regular season, the two teams had not met since December 29, 1994.

The Orange are coming off a commanding 96-51 win over DII Slippery Rock in preseason play. The team made 15 three-point shots and achieved a long-range shooting rate of 47%. Despite losing productive players like Judah Mintz to the NBA Draft and Maliq Brown to Duke, SU managed to reload in the offseason, giving the squad multiple options on offense.

Le Moyne, playing its second season in Division I, lost its top two scorers to graduation. Kaiyem Cleary and Luke Sutherland (West Genesee) were All-NEC First and Second Team and each averaged at least 15 points per night.

In an exhibition game against Mansfield University last week, Le Moyne won 116-67.
