The Bears' Tyrique Stevenson taunting video now looks even worse

A revelation from Bears head coach Matt Eberflus shed light on defensive back Tyrique Stevenson's involvement in Sunday's now-infamous game, in which he taunted Commanders fans while their game-winning Hail Mary was in motion.

When Stevenson turned his attention back to the field, he was catching up. And while he made it back into the game in time to fend off Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' deep pass, it ended up right in the arms of wide receiver Noah Brown as the Bears suffered a devastating 18-15 loss.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Eberflus confirmed the suspicions of those who watched the video: Stevenson was supposed to eliminate Brown on the play.

Still, Eberflus said he was impressed that Stevenson apologized to his Bears teammates.

“It was a really good moment for him to do that, to show responsibility and accountability,” Eberflus said.

Stevenson also publicly apologized for the mistake to X.

“To Chicago and his teammates, I apologize for the lack of attention and focus,” he wrote.

“The game is only over when there are zeros on the clock. I can't take anything for granted. Notes taken, improvements will occur. #Beardown.”

The Hail Mary was particularly debilitating for the Bears as they rallied from a 12-0 deficit to take the lead on a Roschon Johnson touchdown with just 25 seconds to play.

In his media release, Eberflus said he was not concerned that the Bears allowed the Commanders a slight 13-yard lead on a pass from Daniels to Terry McClaurin, where the wideout scampered out of bounds to set the team up for the Hail Mary.

“You're defending a touchdown and they throw a ball 10 or 13 yards… It doesn't matter. It always comes down to the last move,” said Eberflus.

It was a puzzling response from the Bears' head coach, considering the Commanders were at their own 35-yard line before the game-winner and a Daniels throw from there would not have been able to reach the end zone.

The loss dropped the Bears to 4-3 – and last place in the NFC North.
