The Dodgers' $71 million superstar has been linked to the Royals in a potential blockbuster signing

The Kansas City Royals could be World Series contenders in 2025, but not in their current form.

The Royals' offense depended on a superstar talent in 2024: shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. When Witt was on fire, which was the case for most of the season, Kansas City won games. But on the rare occasions he stayed quiet, like in the playoffs, the Royals had little chance.

Adding another big hitter will be crucial for the Royals to improve their run in the American League Division Series this season. And they could get a good look at one of the top free agent targets of the upcoming World Series.

Teoscar Hernández, the Los Angeles Dodgers' All-Star left fielder, is the Royals' perfect target to improve the team's stagnant offense. FanSided's Joel Wagler linked the Royals to Hernandez in a recent offseason predictions article.

“At 32 years old, Hernandez is probably at the end of his prime. Any team that signs him long-term could see diminishing returns. Given the productive 2024 he had, that will likely result in him getting at least the same $23.5 million next year, but maybe not beyond that,” Wagler said.

“This is likely to put a strain on the Royals' budget, especially if Henerandez is seeking a multi-year deal. However, if the Royals are looking for a quick, short-term solution to their left field woes, Hernandez and his bat could be attractive.”

This season, Hernández set a new career high with 33 home runs, posted a fantastic .840 OPS/137 OPS+, and won the Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas. He continued to shine in the playoffs, increasing the odds of a championship win by +4.2% to the Dodgers World Series run.

Hernández is set to receive a three-year, $71 million contract with Spotrac, so signing him won't be cheap. But the Royals proved last winter that they are willing to increase their budget to get deep into the playoffs, and this time they must be prepared to push the limits once again.

If all goes well, Hernández will be right behind Witt in the Royals' midfield next season. But other contenders, including the big-budget Dodgers, are sure to turn to the righty slugger as well.
