TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – One in seven adults and one in five children in Northwest Ohio are food insecure, according to the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank.

God's Instruments is one of the organizations on the front lines of fighting hunger in our community, and the organization has found a new purpose for the old Eastwood Movie Theater on East Broadway.

Today it houses a food bank that provides food to hundreds of people each month, and the goal is to expand that reach through other community activities.

Those involved say the work has changed their lives.

“The feeling of helping others is surreal. It's something that money can't buy or material possessions can't achieve. It's the purest joy on earth. When you see someone come through the front door who may be struggling and you see them walk out with a big smile on their face, it's such a beautiful feeling,” said Pastor Matt Smith, president of God's Instruments.

After several years at a different location, the doors of the new pantry opened earlier this month.

“We are a store-style food pantry, so we give them the freedom of choice. They come in and pick out what they want, depending on the size of their family. At our first food distribution at the new location, we helped 138 families. We expect even more this Saturday at our next food distribution,” Smith said.

The commitment of volunteers and donors makes this work possible.

“Our real power comes from the volunteers and the grace of God because I know He puts it in their hearts, just like He did in me, to give back and help,” Smith said.

Wednesday was the delivery day. Volunteers unloaded several thousand pounds of food, which will be delivered directly to those in need over the weekend.

“We are open to everyone. It doesn't matter your zip code or how far you drive. If you can make it here, we will help you. Hunger knows no borders and neither do we. We help anyone who shows up at our door,” Smith said.

East Toledo holds a special place in Pastor Smith's heart. He grew up here and says it makes his work even more rewarding.

“I want to give back to the community that has given me so much. One of my teachers at Waite High School showed me the difference that helping others can make. She changed my outlook on life. Helping someone is one of the greatest joys that can fill your heart,” Smith said.

The food distribution center is open every first and third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Everyone is welcome here.

The plan is to add things like community movie nights and holiday events to the program in the coming months.
