The first results are in for 6 mayoral elections in Hampton Roads

For the past few weeks on News 3, you've been covering the mayoral races we're tracking in the seven cities of Hampton Roads this election.

The cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Hampton all have mayoral contests on Tuesday. (Newport News is not electing a mayor this year.)

The following information will be updated with the winners of each race.

NORFOLK: Kenny Alexander expects to win

Mayor Kenny Alexander is expected to win re-election and secure a third term. He faced two opponents: the businessman Tommy Leeman and the priest Giovanni Dolmo. This was the first time since 2016 that Alexander faced challengers in his mayoral bid.

PORTSMOUTH: Mayor Glover is counting on a win

Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover is expected to seek re-election. He faced two challengers: Vice Mayor Lisa Lucas-Burke and political newcomer Harold Carothers III.

Glover was elected mayor in 2020, making it his second term as mayor of Portsmouth.

SUFFOLK: Mike Duman leads a close race

Mayor Mike Duman, who was first elected mayor in 2020, is the projected re-election winner but is ahead by just a handful of votes as of Wednesday morning. Votes are still being counted in the tight race.

This year he faced two challengers: former Democratic state delegate Clinton Jenkins and David Bosselman, a fourth-generation farmer.

VIRGINIA BEACH: Bobby Dyer is expected to win

Mayor Bobby Dyer is expected to be re-elected for a third time.

Virginia Beach had the most closely attended mayoral race in Hampton Roads, with five people vying for mayor of the most populous city in the commonwealth.

The four challengers are: John Moss, a former city council member; RK Kowalewitch; Chris Taylor, a current city council member; Sabrina Wooten, a current city council member.

CHESAPEAKE: Rick West expects to win

Mayor Rick West is expected to win re-election. He ran against City Councilman Don Carey in an at-time contentious race.

West has been the city's mayor since 2018. Carey, a former NFL player, was elected to the City Council in 2020.

HAMPTON: Jimmy Gray is expected to win

Since Mayor Donnie Tuck did not run for re-election, two candidates ran to replace him.

Current Vice Mayor Jimmy Gray is expected to win the race. He ran against former city firefighter Richelle Wallace. She ran in 2020 and lost to Tuck.
