The Rams' Jimmy Garoppolo has been suggested as a trade candidate to replace the Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa

The Los Angeles Rams finally got their first win in Week 3 against their nemesis, the San Francisco 49ers. The wild comeback win was made possible by the coaching of Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford, who transformed into the MVP-caliber signal-caller the league knows him as.

With Week 4 just around the corner, the Rams can now breathe a sigh of relief as they will be bringing back two suspended players. Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and offensive lineman Alaric Jackson will be eligible to play, which is good news given the ridiculous amount of injuries LA is dealing with.

Although Garoppolo returns, he will still play second fiddle to Stafford. He could also find himself on the third string behind Stetson Bennet. Either way, Garoppolo probably won't play this season.

However, the former 49ers and Raiders quarterback is now said to be a trade candidate and will prove to be the perfect replacement for the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins lost Tua Tagovailoa to another concussion and his 2024 season and playing career are still very much in question. Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson started Week 3 but seemed completely overwhelmed.

What's worse is that Thompson was injured and is now considered “common ground.” This makes recently signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley and long-time veteran Tim Boyle the only healthy quarterbacks on the Dolphins’ roster.

Head coach Mike McDaniel revealed that the team will be exploring quarterback options, and one of those options could be Garoppolo.

Garoppolo has plenty of experience running an offensive system from McDaniel, who previously served as offensive coordinator for the 49ers in 2023. He also served as running game coordinator between the 2017 and 2020 seasons.

McDaniel and Garoppolo would likely be a better fit than the current quarterbacks on the roster.

Bleacher Report has compiled a list of the “needs” every NFL roster needs right now, and Garoppolo is listed as the perfect trade candidate for the Dolphins. According to the list:

“Now Add: QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Los Angeles Rams (Trade)

The Dolphins placed Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, meaning he won't be able to play until Week 8 at the earliest. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Tagovailoa is seeing a concussion specialist and there is no timetable for his return. Given his long history with concussions, that could mean anything.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins are rolling with Skylar Thompson. Given his limited experience and the Dolphins' ability to compete in the AFC East, this is a risky strategy. Jimmy Garoppolo was just reinstated after serving a two-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. His experience running a Kyle Shanahan offense could be invaluable, even if he ends up just being the backup.

Thompson was and is a risky proposition, and his inability to get the ball out quickly led to an injury that might have knocked him out of Week 4. Given the injuries and limited quarterback room the Dolphins are dealing with, Garoppolo could be the best option.

The Rams have also never objected to acquiring trade capital, and they could get something in a trade with the Dolphins alongside a sixth- or seventh-rounder for Garoppolo.

Garoppolo could be the second quarterback on the roster, but Bennet appears fully prepared to take on a starting role should Stafford leave.
