Officials in Georgia are asking some residents to evacuate after a fire broke out at a chemical plant On Sunday he spread toxic smoke.

The fire started at 5 a.m. Sunday at the BioLab facility in Conyers, which is about 32 miles southeast of Atlanta, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. BioLab is a company that makes pool chemicals, according to its website.

BioLab told Fox News Digital that they are “actively responding to the incident.”

“No injuries were reported for our employees,” a spokesman said. “Our team is on scene and working with first responders and local authorities to assess and contain the situation. As always, the safety of our community remains our top priority.”

In the afternoon, clouds of smoke were already rising from the facility and huge, colorful plumes of clouds were still polluting the air. During a news conference Sunday morning, Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel said a sprinkler head at the facility failed, “causing a mixture with a water-reactive chemical.”

A social media video of the fire shows huge plumes of smoke visible from I-20, which was closed between Salem Road and Turner Hill Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say those living south of I-20 are safe, but those living north of I-20 or between I-20 and Sigman Road are urged to evacuate.

“Please evacuate the area if you are within this zone,” Rockdale County officials said in a Facebook post. “I-20 will be closed in both directions between Salem Road and Turner Hill.”

During a news conference Sunday, Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett told residents that “this is not the time to undertake any type of tour.”

“We urge everyone, no matter where you are from, but especially Rockdale residents, to stay out of this area for your own safety and the safety of all the staff who are already out here and required to work here.” type of incident,” the official advised.

Rockdale County Animal Services urged residents in the evacuation area to bring their animals.

“If you are in the evacuation area, please take your pets with you. Please do not leave them behind,” the organization said. “We are loaded and bringing the more than 50 shelter animals from the area to safety.”
