NEW YORK – The New York Yankees are still alive in the World Series, thanks in large part to their young homegrown shortstop.

Facing the specter of an embarrassing sweep, the Yankees got a grand slam from Anthony Volpe and outstanding work from their bullpen in an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 on Tuesday.

“Goodnight to us and we’ll get another chance tomorrow,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night in the Bronx. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will face Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty.

No team has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit to win the World Series, and the Dodgers remain confident.

“I don’t think anyone expected these guys to give up. We had some offense that I thought could have been better, but we knew it was a bullpen game,” manager Dave Roberts said. “As far as results go, it feels good for me to have six guys in the pen who are feeling good and rested.”

Volpe was a thorn in the Dodgers' side all night long

Volpe did it all on a night when New York needed all it could get from anyone, finishing 2 for 3 with the aforementioned slam, three runs scored, two stolen bases and several sparking plays in the field.

With the home team trailing 2-1 at the end of the third period, Yankee Stadium, that remained largely silent during Game 3 on Mondayfinally broke out. Daniel Hudson, the Dodgers' second pitcher that night, struck out Aaron Judge with one out. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a long single off the wall in right, sending Judge to third. Chisholm then took second place and Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo left, setting the stage for Volpe.

He is from nearby Watchung, New Jerseylaced the first pitch he saw from Hudson five rows deep in the left field seats, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

“I was hectic. I didn’t know I understood it,” Volpe said. “And then I passed out.”

But the router wasn't turned on yet.

After a slow start, it looked like Yankees starter Luis Gil might get through the fifth inning, but he made an error starting out of bounds and never regained his form. The Dodgers' Will Smith hit an 0-2 fastball in the zone into the right-field seats, cutting the Yankees' lead to 5-3. Gil then walked Tommy Edman, causing Boone to walk to left-hander Tim Hill.

However, Hill was greeted with a single to center by Shohei Ohtani. Mookie Betts then hit a fielder's choice, sending Edman to third. The Yankees appeared to be out of the inning when Freddie Freeman hit a double-play grounder to second, but he beat the relay throw, scoring Edman.

Gleyber Torres fouled a ball into right field in the first inning, but when Betts made the catch, Two men in the stands grabbed his glove and one pulled out the ball.

Torres was out, as were the fans, who were sent off for disrupting the game. The Yankees later announced this Fans were not allowed to return for Game 5.

“When it comes to the person in the game, it doesn’t matter,” Betts said after the game. “We lost. That is irrelevant. I'm doing well. He's fine. Everything is cool. We lost the game and that’s kind of what I’m focused on. We have to turn the tide and prepare for tomorrow.”

Early in the series, Torres hit a fly ball to left field Game 1 at Dodger Stadiumwhere a fan also reached over to catch it.

The Yankees bottom line's order finally came through

Heavily maligned in the first three games of the series, New York's bottom four batters scored five hits and drove in seven runs in Game 4.

In the sixth, Austin Wells, batting eighth in the order, threw a Landon cracking fastball to right into the second deck, putting New York back up by two.

Then, in the eighth, the Yankees thrashed around and wiped out the game. Volpe, their seventh-place batter, got things started by hitting the throw to second after ninth-place batter Alex Verdugo's grounder.

Leaving nothing to chance, Torres followed with a three-run home run to right, Juan Soto doubled to right and the struggling Judge delivered an RBI single to left, perhaps a hint of the Yankees' superstar potential in the coming series could have more to say.

“Gerrit is the best pitcher in the game. We really believe in him,” Torres said of Cole, who took the mound in Game 5. “But we have to do the job like we did tonight so we don’t have to put all the pressure on him.”

New York's bullpen continued its strong resurgence after a disastrous Game 1 performance. The combination of Tim Hill, winning pitcher Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr., Luke Weaver and Tim Mayza gave up just one hit in the final five innings.

Freeman gave the Dodgers another fast start

Similar to Game 3, Freeman had the Bronx faithful fearing the worst from the start when he hit a two-run home run to right in the first inning.

The Yankees appeared poised to get both runs back in the bottom half, but Chisholm and Stanton failed to get the job done, with the latter having runners on second and third with two outs.

The Dodgers had a chance to extend their lead in the second when Gavin Lux led off with a double down the first base line, but Gil got Smith to come out and lead Edman into a double play.

The Yankees got on the field during their turn-at-bat in the second on Verdugo's run-scoring groundout.
