Tom Brady, now lead analyst for FOX's football coverage, responded to Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield's recent comments about the “stressed” environment he said Brady created in Tampa Bay's locker room.

Coincidentally, Brady was part of the broadcast team covering Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Midway through the first quarter, Brady directly addressed Mayfield's comments he made on the Casa De Klub podcast earlier in the week.

“I thought it would be stressful not having Super Bowl rings,” Brady said during the broadcast. “I had the mentality of a champion that I went to work with every day. It wasn’t a daycare – if I wanted to have fun, I took my kids to Disneyland.”

“There’s a way to approach this game and that’s with the right mindset, to push each other out of our comfort zones, and great teammates do that.”

Brady, 47, added that there was “no excuse” for his competitive spirit.

After the Buccaneers' 33-16 win, Mayfield said he felt his comments had been misinterpreted.

“I think a lot of it was taken out of context and none of it was personal in any way,” Mayfield said in a news conference. “That’s exactly what he asked the guys to do and that’s the aura of Tom Brady. And that’s what he did to bring a championship here.”

Brady moved to the Buccaneers before the 2020 season and played three years in Tampa. He led the team to its second Lombardi Trophy with a win in Super Bowl 55 in February 2021. Brady was notoriously demanding as a player, leading the NFL in passing yards (5,316) and passing touchdowns (43) in the season that won Tampa Bay's Super Bowl.

Before the 2023 season, Mayfield, 29, was brought in as Brady's replacement in Tampa. He played well in his first season with the Buccaneers and earned his only spot in the Pro Bowl.

“The building was a little different with Tom in it,” Mayfield said earlier this week of the culture under Brady. “Obviously Tom is different in terms of play. He was talking to everyone, the atmosphere was tense, so I think everyone was pretty stressed.”

Mayfield continued: “You hear some stories that if he didn't like a certain play call and he didn't like it all week and they still called it in the game, there might have been a throwaway.” There were many Mind games that involved reaching the goal or throwing it at the feet of the running back or receiver.
