TONIGHT Cold front in San Antonio with the risk of strong thunderstorms

1 minute, 49 seconds Read

SAN ANTONIO – As the week starts out cozy and warm and humid, our next cold front is on the way with some relief and also the threat of thunderstorms across our region.

We start today very mild, damp and windy, with another round of drizzle, fog or patchy light rain. This will be enough to create wet streets and some puddles in the morning. Skies will become partly sunny in the afternoon and temperatures will rise to the high 80s, even near 90 degrees in some places.

Tonight we will see the cold front slowly move into the area, arriving to the west after sunset and then moving into the San Antonio area between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. While a few showers or even a single thunderstorm could develop before the front arrives, the main rain zone with thunderstorms will develop as the front arrives.

There will be enough instability in the atmosphere to create updrafts from storms and just enough wind shear to use the instability to strengthen a few storms. The Level 1 out of 5 “Marginal” severe storm forecast actually overlaps with our region and may expand to a few more counties in our region in the next update. The main threats will be strong gusts and hail during strong to severe storms.

As for precipitation, a general rainfall total of 0.50 to 1.50 inches and more is possible as the line of rain and storms develops and then shifts eastward. Unfortunately, in areas west of this zone there will be much less to see.

Temperatures will drop significantly behind the front, but the air behind this cold front is Pacific cool air and not polar air. This will simply push temperatures closer to average in the mid-70s, with humidity dropping comfortably for a few days before the next chance of rain arrives late in the week with increased humidity.

After isolated showers and storms move east on Tuesday morning, the weather will be fine until Wednesday. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible from Thursday to Friday, with fine weather returning at the weekend. Temperatures remain above average.
