Tornadoes injure at least 11 people in Oklahoma

According to Oklahoma City officials, no deaths were reported, but 11 people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries

A series of tornadoes have caused widespread devastation in parts of Oklahoma.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 3rd, tornado-triggering thunderstorms swept through the area. According to Oklahoma City officials, no fatalities have been reported at this time, but 11 people have been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

While the extreme weather conditions affected several parts of the state as well as parts of Texas, the Associated Press reported that the storms were most severe in and around Oklahoma City.

“I was awake and heard it increasing very quickly,” resident Justin Cue told CNN about the tornado that ripped through his neighborhood.

“Debris started hitting the house and after a few seconds my window exploded and then all you could hear was the roar of the wind and the shattering of wood and glass,” Cue continued, sharing that he saw scratches and Cuts of broken glass have been left behind.

Cue also said his father was hit when their roof collapsed. “He was unconscious for a short time and we weren't sure if he was OK,” he told CNN.

Emergency responders rescued two adults trapped in an overturned mobile home, including a woman who was injured by a falling air conditioner, an Oklahoma City Fire Department (OCFD) representative told the AP.

The OCFD also said in a statement on Facebook that firefighters responded to several people trapped in their cars “due to flash flooding.”

The storm also caused “significant damage” to homes and businesses, as well as trees, power lines and road signs, according to the OCFD statement.

Oklahoma City officials currently estimate that at least 54 buildings sustained minor damage, 43 structures sustained major damage, and 39 structures were completely destroyed.

According to Poweroutage.us, thousands of residents in Oklahoma and Texas are currently without power. Additionally, the National Weather Service continued to issue tornado warnings for portions of Oklahoma and Texas Sunday evening.

For anyone interested in helping those affected by the storms, Oklahoma City officials point out that monetary donations to relief organizations are more effective than donated items.

“Cash allows relief organizations or survivors to purchase what they need, when and where they need it,” officials said.

PEOPLE reached out to OCFD for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
