Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup in north London on Wednesday, handing Pep Guardiola's side their first defeat of the season.

The win took Tottenham into the quarter-finals of the competition and gives coach Ange Postecoglou the chance to fulfill his promise and win a trophy in his second season in charge of the club after an excellent attacking performance.

City made seven changes to the team that beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend – including having Erling Haaland sit out the entire game – and they were open early as Spurs quickly played through their press.

Dejan Kulusevski fed Timo Werner in the penalty area and the German striker shot the ball into the net, scoring his first goal of the season.

Pape Matar Sarr scored the second goal in the 25th minute after the ball came to him outside the penalty area from a well-taken corner and the Senegalese midfielder brilliantly curled it inside the right post.

City equalized in first-half injury time when Matheus Nunes opened the scoring from a cross from Savinho.

Having already lost key players this season, Guardiola said he wanted his team to perform well without injuries, but unfortunately Savinho suffered a blow that resulted in him having to be carried off the bed in the 62nd minute.

That took away some of City's momentum, but Nico O'Reilly almost scored a late equalizer, only for substitute Yves Bissouma to clear the ball off the line and Spurs held on for a 2-1 win.
