Tracking power outages at Duke Energy in the Carolinas during Hurricane Helene on September 26, 2024

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Thousands of Duke Energy customers were without power across the Carolinas Thursday as Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Gulf Coast.

Away As of 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, more than 12,000 Duke customers were without power in North Carolina and South Carolina. Duke's said the outages appeared to be most concentrated in the western regions of the Carolinas Failure map.

The outages came amid severe weather that caused Hurricane Helene to hit Florida late Thursday. The hurricane was expected to bring even stronger winds and heavier rains to the Carolinas, particularly the westernmost counties, on Friday.

Strong winds can knock down trees and branches, which could destroy power lines. Duke Energy said Wednesday it was preparing for outages related to the storm.
