Video shows Iran firing hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel

New Delhi:

Iran launched a large-scale missile offensive against Israel on Tuesday – its second in the past seven months – targeting military bases in an attack dubbed “Operation True Promise II.” Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the attack – sharply escalating military tensions in West Asia – was in response to the killings of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh last week.

A frightening video released by Iranian news agency Press TV on As the video plays and pans to show more of the sky, more and more bright orange spots appear on the horizon.

In the final 25 seconds of the clip, dozens of what look like flaming balls are seen falling over a city center; Many of them explode in the air after being successfully intercepted.

However, some appear to break through and hit the ground.

Another video posted online shows a huge crater near the Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv. The video was geolocated by the American news agency CNN to show that it was shot in a high-rise building in Herzliya, less than 3 km from Mossad headquarters.

The barrage of more than 180 projectiles also included the Fattah hypersonic missiles for the first time. Due to the missile's trajectory, it also flew over Jordan, prompting Amman to announce a suspension of air traffic.

However, Israel's impressive multi-layered air defense system, the centerpiece of which is the Iron Dome, was deployed to intercept the missiles.

As with the April attack, Iran and Israel argued over the hit rate of these missiles, with Tehran citing a 90 percent success rate but Tel Aviv insisting that most were tracked and destroyed by the Iron Dome and Arrow systems.

No injuries were reported in Israel, but one man was killed in the occupied West Bank.

The April attack was in retaliation for an alleged Israeli airstrike by Iran on its consulate in Damascus, Syria, which killed seven Guards officers, including two commanders.

Then, as part of Operation True Promise I, Tehran fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles and older models of explosive drones, an incredible 99 percent of which were intercepted, according to Tel Aviv.

Ballistic missiles are an important part of Tehran's arsenal; According to Iran, it is an important deterrent and retaliatory force against the United States, Israel and other potential regional targets. According to the US, Iran has the most such weapons in the region.

Iran is also believed to have cruise missiles such as the Kh-55, an air-launched nuclear-capable weapon with a range of up to 3,000 km, and the advanced anti-ship missile Khalid Farzh, which has a shorter range – around 300 km. However, both can carry a 1,000 kg warhead.

Earlier today, Iran said its attack was complete and that no further military action was expected unless there were further provocations. However, Israel and the US have announced retaliatory measures.

The US said it would work with Israel to ensure Iran faces “serious consequences”. Israel, meanwhile, has bombed Lebanon again, targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut – a Hezbollah stronghold.

Guy Nir, spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in India, told NDTV that Tehran would receive a befitting response. “If he (Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) plans to start an all-out war with Israel, it would be a mistake for them. Israel's response will be strategic and targeted…not an all-out war.”
