Warriors News: Klay Thompson breaks Mavericks record for most three-pointers in a debut game

5 minutes, 13 seconds Read

In today's Dub Hub:

Klay Thompson's departure from the Golden State Warriors marked a significant moment in franchise history, closing the chapter on a 13-year tenure with the team that resulted in four championships. Following reports of Thompson's dissatisfaction with his situation in Golden State, the Warriors and Mavericks orchestrated a blockbuster sign-and-trade last offseason, officially ending an era that Warriors fans will never forget.

Now that the new season has officially begun, the trade appears to be paying off for both teams as the Warriors and Mavericks are off to promising starts. In the Mavs' opener on Thursday, Thompson wasted no time making an impact, scoring 22 points while hitting 6 of 10 from three-point range. His six three-pointers set a new Mavericks record for the most three-pointers by any player in their debut game with the team.

Watching Thompson catch fire is nothing new for Warriors fans, but seeing him in a Mavericks jersey will take some getting used to. It also doesn't help that the Mavericks' social media team has taken advantage of their opportunities to troll Dub Nation whenever they can (Steph Curry, please take note).

Despite the uniform change, Thompson's legacy with the Warriors remains untouchable. He will always be remembered as a franchise icon, and his success in Dallas should be worth celebrating — just not when he faces Golden State.

Will Klay Thompson join the Dallas Mavericks? The first glance shows yes | The athlete

For this reason, a familiar symbolism, even poetry, exists in Thompson as an outsider. This decision he made, the decision to sign with Dallas, feels a bit like a low-percentage swing, a lift in which the risk of failure is as great as the triumphant success.

How come? To succeed, he must do in Dallas what he couldn't and wouldn't do in the Bay Area. Only with more pressure for an immediate return, with no mercy accumulated from previous exploits, in an environment that could potentially clash with his ethos.

But this is Klay Thompson we're talking about. The eye-catcher. The tough shooter. Owner of Rancho Santa Margarita's largest marbles ever. Who saved a dynasty. Their legacy includes amazing achievements. Thompson never hit a shot he couldn't make. Never played a game he couldn't win. I've never heard a doubter he couldn't silence.

NBA acknowledges error and adjusts result of Warriors-Trail Blazers | ESPN

The NBA found a scoring error in which the Warriors were not given credit for a free throw made by De'Anthony Melton with two minutes left in the third quarter. The league revealed the error Thursday, changing the final score from 139-104 to 140-104.

Game statisticians recorded Melton missing both free throws in that sequence, although Melton made the first.

Hield is new to the offense, but he's just as well built for it as Thompson.

“Tonight was my night,” said Hield, who shot 8 of 12 from the field in his Golden State debut. “The next night it can be JK. Steph is always Steph. He is world class. I just want to take advantage of my opportunities, run the field and try to keep the field open for Steph and other guys to be special.”

Ex-Clippers employee files lawsuit, says he was fired over Kawhi concerns | ESPN

Later that season, Leonard tore his right meniscus in a playoff series against the Phoenix Suns. After that injury, Shelton said he wrote Frank a complaint about his diminished role and how the team handled Leonard's health. In it, he said he found that “the mishandling of Kawhi Leonard's injury and return protocol was staggering” and that “the disregard for his recovery process is unacceptable.” Shelton also said the Clippers placed more emphasis on Leonard's productivity than his recovery.

The next day, Frank responded, “We take your concerns very seriously and will begin an immediate investigation.”

What is Victor Wembanyama's second-year ceiling? | The alarm clock

One of the key questions about Wembanyama's performance this season is what opportunities he will be given. It might help that he's spending all of his minutes playing with real point guards: Chris Paul, who has created phenomenal looks for centers in the past, and Tre Jones.

But while Wembanyama may have a higher quality of chances this season, his quantity of chances is unlikely to increase as much. Playing as the clear No. 1 on a talent-poor team. Wemby was the first option last season and became only the sixth rookie ever with a usage rate of at least 30 percent. But four of the other five used fewer possessions as a sophomore.

About the Warriors, Trail Blazers and Gaza

I remember NBA players refusing ownership and threatening to leave the playoffs because they saw injustice in the world and were tired of pretending it was normal to remain untouched.

The NBA regular season is back. Every fan base has the hope that comes with the start of a new season. Maybe a championship. Maybe just the exciting development of a young player. Maybe an unexpected playoff appearance.

But perhaps the 2024-25 season will bring NBA players back to social justice movements and using their power to help those in need.
