Donald Trump stood a long chance of losing the Democratic stronghold of New York and its 28 electoral votes in the 2024 election, but the former president was able to close the gap after his performance in 2020.

As of Wednesday morning, Trump received 44.6 percent of the vote in the state. According to 270.com, he received 37.8% in 2020 and 36.5% in 2016. Biden defeated Trump in the last election in New York by 23%; Harris won state by just 7 points.

Going back even further, a Republican presidential candidate hasn't received such a high percentage in New York since 1988, when George HW Bush defeated Michael Dukakis. That year, Bush received 47.5% of the vote in New York. Additionally, no Republican presidential candidate has won New York since 1984, when Ronald Reagan defeated Walter Mondale. That year, Reagan received 53.8% of the vote in New York.
