Tottenham Hotspur are through to the last 16 of the EFL Cup after goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr gave them a narrow win over a youthful Manchester City on a night when both teams suffered injuries.

The two teams rotated, especially City, with Pep Guardiola turning to his talented youngsters. And the difference in experience showed as Spurs created far more chances.

The excellent Werner scored the first goal on the counter-attack before Sarr scored a superb second goal to give Tottenham a deserved 2-0 lead after just 26 minutes.

But City gradually got the game under control and were able to equalize just before half-time through Matheus Nunes.

City had more possession in the second half and built up pressure as Spurs fell deeper, but it was still the home team who had the better chances, missing one-on-ones twice.

A superb goalline from Yves Bissouma ensured his side took the lead in the game's final crucial moment and the Spurs side shone as they marched into the quarter-finals.

Tottenham are hoping Micky van de Ven's hamstring injury is not too serious, while Manchester City await an update on Savinho, who had to be carried off on a stretcher in the second half.
