INDIANAPOLIS – Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is suffering from a sprained ankle after Sunday's win against the Steelers, coach Shane Steichen said.

Taylor's status for next week is uncertain, but the Colts don't believe he will need short-term injured reserve. When defensive tackle DeForest Buckner suffered a severe ankle sprain earlier this season, he was immediately placed on injured reserve.

“He has a sprained ankle right now,” Steichen said.

Taylor has suffered severe ankle sprains in the past. The Colts running back suffered a severe ankle sprain during the 2022 season, missed three of the next five games and returned for five games before re-injuring his ankle, leading to surgery that eventually stretched into the first A contract dispute dragged on for four games of the 2023 season.

Early signs of Taylor's injury on Sunday suggested that this injury was not as serious as the first. Taylor had his ankle re-taped and initially tried to get back into the game, although the team ultimately decided it was best to keep him out of action.

“You get picked up again and try everything you can, but we have two other great (backs),” Taylor said. “You know what Trey and Goody did to Pittsburgh (last year), so there’s never any doubt about that.”

Taylor was initially optimistic after the game, saying he was “1,000 percent” confident he could make a full recovery, although he didn't give a timetable for that.

“We’ll see how the week goes,” said Steichen. “We’ll see how it goes.”
