Texas football sophomore receiver Johntay Cook II has left the program by mutual consent, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday.

Sarkisian said he has nothing but respect for Cook and his family and wishes him the best of luck in the future.

Cook, a product of DeSoto High School, was a five-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite. He was the No. 3 wideout in his class and the No. 29 overall prospect this cycle.

He played in 14 games last season and racked up 136 receiving yards. In 2024, he caught eight passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns in six games.

Cook's snap count had dropped significantly since Week 4. He played just seven snaps against Mississippi State in Week 5 and played four snaps against Oklahoma in Week 7. He didn’t play against Georgia or Vanderbilt.

Sarkisian was asked if attrition was inevitable in the transfer portal era given the strength the Longhorns have built at wideout.

“Some of it is natural,” Sarkisian said. “We try to really pride ourselves on being a really good development program. I think we have some examples of guys on our roster today who maybe weren't at the forefront in their first or second year and have gone on to become really productive players.” So I'm trying not to buy into that mindset Falling victim that this is exactly what will happen, but I understand when it happens, if that makes sense.

Texas aggressively pursued wide receivers in the offseason, adding three power conference transfers in Isaiah Bond, Silas Bolden and Matthew Golden. All three of those players have taken more snaps than Cook so far this season. So does true freshman Ryan Wingo.
