When will we know the winner of the 2024 presidential election?

Election Day is fast approaching and millions of people will head to the polls to cast their votes.

Once the polls close on Election Day, the question becomes: When will we find out who won?

How long does it take for a candidate to drop out of the presidential race?

Normally the waiting time isn't that long. In 1896, William Jennings Bryant took two days before conceding the election to President William McKinley. Since then, most candidates have conceded either on the same day or the next day, with two exceptions – 2000 and 2020.

2000 presidential election

In 2000, the presidential race between Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush took place in Florida. The Sunshine State has had voting problems with hanging chads and allegations of misconduct. The case went to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Bush. In total, it took Gore 36 days to concede the election.

2020 presidential election

In 2020, then-former Vice President Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, but it took four days for a winner to be announced. Trump posted on social media on November 15, 2020, “He won,” referring to Biden and saying he would not serve another term on January 7, 2021, a day after an insurrection on Capitol Hill. Trump never conceded the election.

Election day is Tuesday, November 5th.

How long will we wait for a presidential election winner?

Since the last presidential election in 2020, many of the sweeping election laws and voting access changes made in response to the coronavirus pandemic have faced polarized legislatures and become a source of division.

Now voters in key states like North Carolina are dealing with the aftermath of devastating Hurricane Helene.

Other key swing states that Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are competing for, such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, will not be allowed to begin processing absentee and absentee ballots until Election Day, which is expected to slow counting.

Are Trump or Harris leading the presidential polls?

Harris and Trump are tied in the final weeks leading up to Election Day, according to an exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll.

The poll has Harris at 45% and Trump at 44%, a tighter race than the August poll. Then, following the Democratic National Convention, Harris led Trump by 5 percentage points, 48% to 43%. The poll of 1,000 likely voters, conducted on landlines and cellphones Oct. 14-18, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Other indicators of the president's race

Allan Lichtman, the historian known for accurately predicting nine of the last ten presidential elections, has shared his prediction for this year's White House election. He predicts Harris will win. In a video first reported by The New York Times, Lichtman explained that his prediction is based on a series of thirteen “keys” or true-false questions that assess the strength and performance of the incumbent party in the White House.
Harris and Trump are neck and neck in the race for the White House in 2024. The Real Clear Politics average of national polls puts Harris ahead of Trump by 0.2 percentage points. The two are in a dead heat in every battleground state.
Gambling lines favor Trump. On October 18, Trump's probability of winning on Polymarket, a crypto trading platform, exceeded 61% for the first time since Biden left the race. Betfair Exchange, the UK's largest peer-to-peer betting platform, predicted on its temperature gauge on Thursday morning that Trump was likely to win.
