Election Day 2024 is here. And eyes are on eight critical “battleground states” that could decide the results: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

These states, known for flipping both blue and red, earning them the name “swing states,” were crucial to the 2016 and 2020 election results. Experts expect 2024 to be no different becomes.

Both Republican nominee for former President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee for Vice President Kamala Harris have campaigned extensively in these battleground states in hopes of securing the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.

Tonight, Assets will report updates on decisions in these key states and provide live coverage after the election closes. Here's a breakdown of the states to watch after the polls close, as well as our latest updates on vote counts:

Arizona, polls close at 9 p.m. ET

Electoral votes: 11

Why it matters: Arizona was a surprise victory for Biden in 2020, marking only the second time in nearly 70 years that a Democratic candidate won the state.

Current survey: Trump currently leads Harris in Arizona by just over two points, according to a FiveThirtyEight poll

Timing of results: Arizona waits to release results until all counties have reported their results or one hour after polls close. In 2020, the results first appeared around 10:02 p.m. ET.

LATEST UPDATE: This section will be updated regularly with results once the surveys are completed.

Georgia, polls close at 7 p.m. ET

Electoral votes: 16

Why it matters: Georgia, a key state in both 2016 and 2020, narrowly went for Biden in 2020. The state has since been embroiled in litigation, with Trump facing ongoing legal challenges over his attempts to overturn the earlier results.

Current survey: According to a FiveThirtyEight poll, Trump and Harris are neck and neck in Georgia, with a gain of 1.5 points.

Timing of results: Initial results could appear shortly after polls close, as in 2020, when the first data was reported at 7:20 p.m. ET.

LATEST UPDATE: As the Georgia election ends, the results are starting to come in, and while it will take some time for the full results to be tallied, Trump is in the lead, according to initial reports from the AP. However, as of this writing at 7:40 p.m. ET, only 9% of counties are reporting. Georgia faced fake bomb threats on Tuesday, and some polling places extended hours to explain the disruption.

This “blue wall” condition remains crucial to any successful strategy. GOP strategist Frank Luntz says to look directly at the city of Dearborn, Michigan, to see if Trump will win. He said an “incredibly high voter turnout” would be “good news for Harris,” suggesting she will win the state. Otherwise, Trump will likely take Michigan.

Current survey: According to a FiveThirtyEight poll, Harris has a narrow one-point lead over Trump in the state.

Timing of results: Most polls close at 9 p.m. ET, but some counties report an hour earlier. In 2020, the AP called Michigan for Biden at 5:58 p.m. ET the next day.

Why it matters: While Nebraska is traditionally conservative, it divides its votes by district. This division allows for the possibility of a single electoral swing if a district is Democratic. The so-called “blue dot,” the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Omaha, could give Harris a single electoral vote.

Current survey: According to a FiveThirtyEight poll, Trump is ahead of Harris nationally, but specifically in the “blue dot” area, Harris is ahead by 7 points.

Timing of results: The early returns are expected to occur shortly after 9 p.m. ET.
