Why the Dallas Cowboys aren't interested in future Hall of Fame receiver Davante Adams

1 minute, 30 seconds Read

After Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams publicly requested a trade on Tuesday following another poor start to the season in Sin City, a report mentioned the Dallas Cowboys as one of the teams that had shown initial interest.

However, the Cowboys have not expressed interest in Adams, a source told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, because the team is “comfortable” with its current receiving corps. This coupled with the potential asking price for Adams means the Cowboys are staying out of talks in the early stages.

The timing of Adams' trade request comes at an interesting time for the Cowboys as they prepare to be without veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks in Pittsburgh after he developed an infection following a knee injection he received over the weekend had contracted. That leaves Dallas' wide receiver options for the immediate future as CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, KaVontae Turpin and Ryan Flournoy.

Lamb leads the team with 316 receiving yards through four weeks, while the rest of the receiver group has combined for just 358 yards. With Cooks and Turpin set to enter free agency in the spring, the Cowboys will need to work on some receiver depth – whether through in-season trade acquisitions, free agency next offseason or in the April draft.

Head coach Mike McCarthy, who coached Adams in Green Bay for five seasons from 2014 to 2018, praised Adams in his Wednesday morning press conference but expressed the same thoughts about his team's receiving corps.

“I personally have great love and respect for Davante,” McCarthy said. “I don’t know exactly what’s going on there, but we’re very confident with our reception room.”

The Cowboys will leave Dallas for Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon as they prepare to face the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday Night Football on NBC.
