Will there be another debate between Harris and Trump? What we know

2 minutes, 3 seconds Read

Ahead of Tuesday's vice presidential debate, some are wondering whether this will be the last major political contest of the 2024 election.

After the final presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Harris was widely declared the winner, urging Trump to try again.

Trump has said there will not be a second debate despite repeated taunts from Democrats. Even some Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham R.C. have said they would like to see Trump agree to a second debate as they seek to shift the focus from personal attacks to Harris' policy positions.

Here's what you should know about the chances of another presidential debate:

Harris has agreed to another debate with CNN, Trump has declined

Immediately after the presidential debate on September 10, Harris' campaign team issued a statement saying: “Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is Donald Trump?”

In a rebuttal a few days later on Truth Social, Trump said he would not attend his third debate.

Since then, Democrats in Indiana and Pennsylvania have been putting up billboards calling Trump “a chicken” for not participating in another debate.

Harris also accepted an invitation from CNN to a debate on October 23, but Trump again declined, saying at a rally: “It's just too late – the voting has already started.” The debates typically take place throughout October . His debate against President Joe Biden in June was a historical anomaly.

Harris stepped up her push for a second debate at a campaign rally on Sunday.

“I know we will be cheering for Coach Walz when he debates JD Vance,” she said at a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada. “But listen, their debate shouldn’t be the last word either. I’m trying to debate Donald Trump again.”

From what the Trump campaign told USA TODAY, they'll just have to keep hoping.

“As President Trump has said, only losers demand a rematch. Kamala Harris lost the debate and she knows it,” said Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary.
