NORTH COLLEGE HILL, Ohio (WXIX) – A Woodward High School athlete was injured in a shooting during the school's football game in North College Hill, Cincinnati Public Schools said.

According to NCH Superintendent Eugene Blalock, shots were fired outside the stadium gates behind the elementary school around 8:15 p.m.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots and a person being carried away with a graze gunshot wound into the middle school gymnasium.

“This evening, a Woodward Career Technical High School student-athlete was injured in a shooting during the school's football game in North College Hill, Cincinnati Public said in a statement.

“Cincinnati Public Schools is aware of this tragic event and our support continues to be available to the student, his family, friends and the school community. The CPS Crisis Response Team will be on site to provide support to students as they return to school on Tuesday.”

The game was ended early and according to the NCH superintendent, this will be North College Hill's last home game of the season.

He said that there were metal detectors at the game and masks and carrying bags were prohibited, and that something like this still happened.

The police did not release any current information from the crime scene.

This came two weeks after shots were fired near the football stadium, interrupting North College Hill's game against Cincinnati Country Day.

Officials cleared the players and fans from the stadium without incident and subsequently concluded that this was an isolated incident that had nothing to do with the game at the school.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to cancel the remainder of the game,” police wrote on social media.

North College Hill did not play the following week because their opponent, Miami Valley Christian Academy, declined to go there.

However, tonight's game took place as planned.

North College Hill City Schools and the North College Hill Police Department said in a joint statement that the athletic department has taken appropriate precautions and procedures to ensure the safety of all attendees at its sporting events.
