World Series: Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is expected to play in Game 3 after suffering a shoulder injury

Shohei Ohtani should be ready for Game 3 of the World Series.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Sunday that Ohtani, who suffered a shoulder injury in the team's Game 2 win over the New York Yankees on Saturday, is “in great shape” and will be back on Monday Bronx should play.

Roberts said he doesn't have any specific test results, but he doesn't go by what his coaching staff says and that Ohtani “felt good” Sunday morning.

“I think he's obviously very aware of himself and his body. “So if he feels good enough to go, I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be there,” Roberts said.

A final decision on Ohtani's status will be made on Monday.

The Dodgers superstar suffered a left shoulder injury in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday, leaving a stunned, previously cheering Dodger Stadium as he left the field with an athletic trainer.

Ohtani was ejected while attempting to steal second base to end the bottom of the seventh inning and remained on the ground in pain. He held his left arm, which bore the brunt of his weight as he slipped into the second arm. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports later reported that it was a shoulder injury.

Fox Sports' microphones recorded Ohtani's conversation after the injury, with a Japanese-language report reporting that the slugger said his left shoulder popped out of its socket.

Ohtani left Dodger Stadium almost immediately after the game ended, although Roberts told reporters after the game that initial tests on Ohtani's injury had come back positive despite the frightening scene. Roberts said at the time that Ohtani had a “small” subluxation, but did not elaborate on the extent of the injury.

The Dodgers were leading 4-1 at the time of the injury and were able to win 4-2 and take a 2-0 lead in the series. With the positive news about Ohtani, the baseball world can breathe a sigh of relief ahead of the rest of the series: The 2024 World Series has been scheduled to be Ohtani's first appearance on baseball's biggest stage, with ratings to match. The series continues with Game 3 on Monday in New York.

Stealing bases had been the story of Ohtani's season as he went from being a fast but inefficient baserunner to one of baseball's best players in his first season with the Dodgers. He made MLB history with his first 50-50 season, finishing the year with 59 steals on 63 attempts, but the postseason was a different story for that skill.

The game in which he was injured was only his second attempt at the playoffs, without success.
