NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – It's a big weekend in New Braunfels as this year's Wurstfest is officially open and the popular German heritage festival enters its 63rd year.

People can enjoy good food and drink, music, dancing, rides and games, and great Alpine and Bavarian-style entertainment, all serving the community that hosts it each year.

The festival starts today at 4 p.m. with the opening ceremony and the annual “Wurstbiten” at 5:30 p.m. in the Wursthalle.

The sausage festival opening hours are:

  • Fridays – 5pm – 11pm
  • Saturdays: 11:00 a.m. to midnight
  • Sundays – 11am – 10pm
  • Monday to Thursday – 5pm – 10pm

This annual celebration of sausage making and cultural traditions promises an exciting program that attracts visitors from far and wide. Festival-goers are encouraged to put on their quirky “chicken hats,” lace up their dancing shoes and prepare to raise their mugs to celebrate authentic German cuisine and entertainment. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Landa Park along the scenic Comal River, Wurstfest not only highlights New Braunfels' rich German roots, but also serves as a community center that brings locals and visitors together for a lively and engaging experience.

This year's entertainment program is as impressive as ever and includes over 40 bands from various genres and cultures. Festival visitors can enjoy more than 250 live performances by a wide variety of musicians on five stages and several dance areas.

The opening ceremony will feature Grammy-winning polka artist Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra, as well as talented accordionist Alex Meixner, known for his energetic performances. The line-up also includes traditional acts such as the Münchholzhauser Blaskapella from Braunfels, Germany, and Die Schlauberger from New York.

Longtime festival goers can look forward to the return of Squeezebox with Mollie B, who was celebrated as International Band of the Year in 2019.

“Music has been an integral part of the Wurstfest celebration since its inception in 1961,” noted Sherman Krause, President of Wurstfest 2024, emphasizing the role of classic German genres in creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere.

In addition to offering lively music and cultural celebrations, Wurstfest also emphasizes community support and local fundraising.

Over 20 local nonprofits participate through food and beverage sales and contribute to their annual fundraising goals through the generosity of festival attendees.

Since its humble beginnings as a one-day event in 1961, Wurstfest has grown into a major attraction, attracting over 200,000 visitors each year and demonstrating the enduring appeal of German culture and community spirit in Texas.

The Wurstfest runs from today until November 10th.
