Yankees fans ejected from Game 5 by Dodgers for 'outrageous' contact with Mookie Betts

The two New York Yankees fans who interfered with Mookie Betts' attempt to make a catch in Game 4 of the World Series have been barred from attending Game 5 on Wednesday.

Yankees fans Austin Capobianco and John Peter were ejected from Game 4 following the Betts incident in the first inning, when the Los Angeles Dodgers star made a grab along the right field wall in foul territory. Although Capobianco and Peter were ejected, Yankees season ticket holders told ESPN they were told they could attend Game 5.

However, MLB reportedly asked the Yankees to bar Capobianco and Peter from participating in Game 5. Capobianco told ESPN that the Yankees warned him that he and his friend would be arrested if they tried to attend Wednesday night's game. It's unclear whether the ban will last beyond Wednesday, ESPN reported.

The Yankees released a statement Wednesday calling the incident “outrageous and unacceptable physical contact” with Betts.

“The safety of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of every event at Yankee Stadium and must not be compromised,” the statement continued. “Tonight is the last home game of the year and we want all the passion of our fans to be on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the exuberance of supporting your team can never lead to intentionally attacking players at physical risk.”

Capobianco and Peter were seen trying to rip the ball out of Betts' glove after he grabbed the fly ball from Gleyber Torres. Capobianco pulled on Betts' glove while Peter grabbed Betts' right wrist. Torres was immediately ruled out due to fan interference.

Betts was visibly upset with the fans after the game. However, he brushed the incident aside when asked about it after the Dodgers' 11-4 loss.

“When it comes to the person in the game, it doesn't matter,” Betts said after the Yankees extended the series with an 11-4 win. “We lost. That is irrelevant. I'm doing well. He's fine. Everything is cool. We lost the game and that’s kind of what I’m focused on. We need to turn the page and prepare for tomorrow.”

The Dodgers have another chance to clinch a World Series title on Wednesday night as they hold a 3-1 lead in the series. Even if the Yankees win Game 5, Wednesday's game will be the final game of the series at Yankee Stadium. Games 6 and 7 will take place in Los Angeles if necessary.
