New York Yankees fans are doing everything they can to give their team a glimmer of hope.

With the Bronx Bombers on the verge of losing the World Series in front of their home crowd on Tuesday night, it didn't take long for perhaps the strangest moment of this year's postseason to arrive.

In the bottom of the first inning, Gleyber Torres hit a pop fly down the right field line that headed toward the stands.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts jumped for the ball and caught it, but appeared to be in a danger zone.

A Yankee fan in the front row literally tried to rip the glove from Betts' hand and get the ball out – another fan held Betts' wrists as the ball finally came out.

It is questionable whether it was fair for the fan to play for the ball – fans are not allowed to reach into the pitch, but if the ball is outside the wall it is anyone's ball.

Betts was clearly not happy when the referee gave the out-of-bounds signal while security also came over.

It wasn't quite Jeffrey Maier, as it ended up being ruled a home run for the Yanks.

Both fans were escorted out of the stadium by security personnel.

New York has lost the first three games of the World Series – Monday was its first home game in the Fall Classic since winning in 2009.

The game started like Game 3: with a two-run home run from Freddie Freeman – the eight-time All-Star is on track to be named World Series MVP, having hit a home run in every game this fall Classic.
