It happened again. Donald Trump has been declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election, capping a turbulent campaign and an unprecedented comeback for the former Republican president.

The Associated Press called the race just before 6 a.m. this morning after projecting Trump as the winner over Vice President Kamala Harris in several critical swing states, including Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The victory makes Trump the first convicted felon elected president and the second president (after Grover Cleveland) elected to two non-consecutive terms.

We will learn much more about the impact of Trump's return to power in the coming hours and days. But first, let's recap yesterday's biggest results in Massachusetts and New England:

In the Senate: Senator Elizabeth Warren easily won a third term in the Senate, but Democrats are on the verge of losing their 51-49 majority in the House in 2025. Republicans have flipped seats in West Virginia and Ohio, and they are ahead in Montana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Nevada and Wisconsin are also nearby. And the Democrats didn't pick up any seats from the Republicans. This is where the Senate races are in play.

In the house: The Democrats actually have a chance of changing the House of Representatives. In fact, NPR reports that this is more likely. While it will be some time before we know how all the races will turn out, the House could be a crucial tool for Democrats to push back against GOP control of the White House and Senate. Follow the house's most important races here.

Mixed results in Massachusetts

Question 1 past a broad Margin giving Comptroller Diana DiZoglio the authority to audit the Legislature. Now we wait to see what kind of scrutiny DiZoglio pursues — which could lead to a legal battle with state House leaders over what the state Constitution actually allows.

Question 2 also passed double digits, eliminating the requirement to take the MCAS exam for high school students. (You still have to take the test, but you don't have to pass it to graduate.)

Question 3 is the state's closest ballot issue race. The “Yes” campaign to give Uber and Lyft drivers the right to unionize rose 54% to 46%, with 87% of counties reporting it. (The AP had not called a winner as of 6:50 a.m.) This would introduce a sector-based approach to union organizing in Massachusetts that is more common in Europe. According to some experts, there is also likely to be a legal challenge.

Meanwhile, voters rejected both Question 4 Legalize psychedelics and Question 5 Raise the minimum wage for tipped workers.

On Beacon Hill: Local Republicans flipped at least three seats in the state House of Representatives, dealing a small dent to the state Legislature's Democratic supermajority. Find your local senator or representative here.

Around New England

New Hampshire: The most competitive gubernatorial race in the country went to Republican Kelly Ayotte, a former U.S. senator and attorney general. She beat former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig in a race that included much debate about abortion and Massachusetts.

Democrat Maggie Goodlander, a former government lawyer married to President Biden's top national security adviser, won the open race for New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District.

Connecticut: Democratic Rep. Jahana Hayes fended off Republican challenger George Logan in a rematch of their razor-thin 2022 race. Nutmeggers also approved a ballot question to allow no-excuse absentee voting.

Maine: Trump received his only New England electoral vote in Maine's 2nd Congressional District, where there is a tight race between incumbent Democratic Rep. Jared Golden and Republican Austin Theriault. Mainers also appear to be close to voting down a ballot question to replace their state flag.
