Yves Missi from the Pelicans wows in his NBA debut

Baylor's Yves Missi, drafted 21st overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, was a modest choice for many.

Missi, a raw, 6-foot-3 center who thrives on athleticism, was considered a project selection for the New Orleans Pelicans. A player they may not be able to release due to the foreseeable future.

But on Wednesday night, when 20 different NBA teams competed, Missi was perhaps the smartest rookie of the bunch.

It didn't take an overwhelming performance. The league's top pick shot just 2 of 8 overall, and top-drafted centers Zach Edey and Donovan Clingan had less-than-adequate debuts. But Missi was definitely strong.

In 23 minutes off the bench, he scored 12 points on efficient 5-for-8 shooting and added seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and three highly effective blocks. He made both free throws successfully and finished with a positive plus-minus of +4, a strong mark for a freshman.

Most importantly, he was crucial to the team's win against the Bulls as he was a big-time player. He played more minutes than starter Daniel Theis, scored more points, grabbed more boards and adjusted his blocks.

There is no guarantee that Missi can keep up with the precedent he has set. He is only 20 years old and indeed has a pretty raw game that needs external factors to push him to the edge.

However, it became clear on Wednesday night that the Pelicans may have an impactful player on their hands if they continue to focus on his development. And one that could be particularly helpful given the gap in the middle of the team.
